MAY 28, (PRINTWORDS.COM)- Acer Group which happens to be one of the largest supplier of personal computer demonstrated their forthcoming tablet PC. Reportedly, the company has plans in store to launch the device in a later phase of the current year. Needles to mention that these device is going to fall under the same belt as that of Apple i Pad which has already hit the popularity charts for each and every gadget freak.
Acer’s new device sports a 7” screen along with a QWERTY keyboard which is indeed a surprise package. Acer’s tablet PC comes with a 7” colour touch screen that was shown to one and all by the chief executive of the company Gianfranco Lanci at the press event launched in Beijing earlier this week. However, the head of the company Acer group didn’t not reveal any detailed specifications for the upcoming device. Although he did left a hint that the gadget is going to be decked up with 3G connectivity.
Apart from that all the regular features will be there beside an integrated Wi-Fi along with the Blue tooth which are natural expectations. Its pretty obvious that the upcoming tablet PC of Acer group is based upon based upon a microprocessor powered by the ARM architecture (to be precise , it is Qualcomm Snapdragon). The new device is based upon Google Android but not upon Google Chrome operating system (OS) as it was speculated earlier. It does feature a hardware keyboard that is planted under the screen and latent from one and all which shall let all users to type in in much easier pattern than a normal touchscreen keyboard.
The keyboard, unfortunately, is very small and it is questionable whether it will be possible to type on it comfortably: typing with one hand while holding the device with another will hardly be convenient since tablets seem to be much more heavy than mobile phones, whereas typing with both hands when the product is lying on the table will barely be convenient since the keyboard is too small. In any case, the drawbacks of the hardware keyboard are basically the same as for an on-screen one.
At present the official price of Acer’s tablet is not known, but earlier reports suggested that it may be as low as around $300. Unfortunately, the slate will only be available sometime in Q4 2010.
The tablet PC from Acer will have to compete not only against Apple iPad, but also against the approaching Asustek Computer’s Eee Pad, Samsung Electronics’ S Pad and other products of the kind. Since the prices of the slates do not seem to be truly low, customers will pay a lot of attention on services provided by manufacturers of such devices, e.g., content delivery mechanisms and so on. In case of Acer, the actual platform owner will be Google, which partners with various distributors of content. However, Google Android will also power many other slates and Acer will either have to offer certain exclusive features or to cut down the price of its tablet so to be competitive.
