‘The Last Airbender’, Not One Of Shyamalan’s Best

JULY 01 (PRINTWORDS NEWS)airbender kid 73 736921gm a The Last Airbender, Not One Of Shyamalans Best The recent movies made by director M. Night Shyamalan have not got good reviews or broken box office records. The director who won rave reviews with his Signs and Sixth Sense seems to have lost his acumen to an extent as is evident from his latest movies. His latest offering The Last Airbender is partly inspiring and partly average. When he started this movie it was meant to appeal to his young child addicted to Nickelodeon’s animated TV series. It may appeal to those who do not have an appetite for vampires and werewolves and would like to give the recently released Eclipse a miss. The film derives the plot from the popular TV series based on Martial arts.

We get introduced to a different type of avatar in the movie, but it has got nothing to do with the avatar in James Cameron’s magnum opus that was released last year. The protagonist Aang is a 12 year old Avatar who can control the 4 basic elements with his magical power, namely fire, water, air and Earth. There are a number of scenes in the movie that defies logic but when you watch a summer popcorn guzzler with plenty of spare time in hand, you do not look for much logic! The visual effects are top notch as one can expect from the director.

The director has churned out an average fare with this film, as its appeal lies within the audience who are acquainted with the TV series. At the box office it may not win the battle with Eclipse which has already set a new record.
