London, Feb 2 (PRINTWORDS NEWS) New rules are made at Heathrow and Manchester airports that some selected passengers will have to go through body scanners before boarding the plane. It has now become mandatory that the selected people will have to succumb to scanning. In case they refuse they will be prevented from boarding the flight.
The security rule has started after there was an attempt of blowing up an airplane over Detroit on Christmas Day. The problem is that, the scanner hampers passengers’ privacy. Lord Adonis, the Transport Secretary said, for the time being scans will be performed on a very limited number of passengers. He stated to the House Of Commons in a written statement, “If a passenger is selected for scanning, and declines, they will not be permitted to fly.” It is said that scanners will be introduced in Birmingham in the recent future.
The scanner is used in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 since October. Scanners are going to be introduced for Terminals 1 and 3 towards the end of this month. The Department of Transport has ensured that the process will cover privacy of individuals. It will not cause any harms to health as well. Lord Adonis said, “The code will require airports to undertake scanning sensitively, having regard to the rights of passengers.” Manchester Airport further confirmed that the procedures will ensure the protection of privacy of passengers. Sarah Barrett, the head of customer experience said, “It will enhance security for everyone, which can only be a good thing, without compromising people’s privacy. The image generated by the body scanner cannot be stored or captured nor can security officers viewing the images recognise people.” She made it clear that the process does not allow the security staff to see passengers naked.
Initially there was a rule that people under the age of 18 will not have to go through this procedure. However, government has now overturned this rule for security issues.
