London, Jan 03 (PRINTWORDS NEWS) -
The assault of the Somali pirates on global shipping continue unabated. In a recent development that has created sensation in UK political scene, the Somali Pirates have captured another British ship yet again. This took place despite the surveillance of the International Task force. The pirates have seized two ships hailing from Singapore and UK, respectively. The British flagged Asian Glory, and Singaporean-flagged Pramoni fell prey to the pirates who managed to give the watchdog a miss in the Gulf of Aden.
The incident proves that piracy continues to be a threat in the troubled region despite intervention from leading countries. The International Naval Armada was employed by EU almost a year back to curb the menace. Despite its presence, pirate assaults on the sea have increased manifold in the past one year. In fact, over 80 ships have been hijacked by the pirates in the previous two years. In some cases the pirates have succeeded in extracting heavy ransoms.
EU Naval Force spokesman Commander John Harbour said that Asian Glory was seized by the pirates on Friday night when the ship was 600 miles away from Somalia coast. The 45000 tonne ship was headed to Saudi Arabia. It did not enter the travel corridor protected by EU deployed naval armada. The crew in the ship were able to control the UK based management company and informed it of the hijacking. The Singapore flagged ship was headed for India. Before capturing the Asian Glory the Somali Piorates seized another British tanker named St James Park. The families of the crew members on the captured ship have been notified.
The increased piracy in the Gulf of Aden is linked deeply to the lawlessness prevailing in Somalia since the 1990s. The population of the nation have turned to piracy as the political situation has worsened over the years. Eu officials feel that close to 1000 Somali youths are involved in the piracy racket. Apart from the pirates, Somalia has turned a safe haven for extremist terrorist outfits and the situation is not likely to improve unless the anarchy is replaced with a stable government.
