Kelly was the leader of a band of bank robbers in Australia’s Victoria state in the 19th Century. He and his gang killed policemen and robbed banks till he was hanged in 1880 at age 25 and then no one knew anything about his body. Rumours said his body was in the mass grave at the Old Melbourne Gaol with the corpses of 33 others. The prison shut down in 1929 and it was decided that the bodies of executed inmates will be exhumed and moved to the Pentridge Prison. At the exhumation a mob of onlookers stole some remains, including what was believed to be Kelly’s skull, which was later discovered and displayed at the Old Melbourne Gaol that had turned into a historic site.

But the skull was stolen again in 1978 and on November 11, 2009, Baxter, a farmer from Western Australia handed over to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine a skull with the inscription E.Kelly (Ned’s real name was Edward) without saying how he found the skull. Then through CT Scans and X-Rays, anthropological and historical data, and DNA analysis, a skeleton from the bunch at Pentridge was identified as Kelly’s but most of the head was still missing.

Kelly was known to be something like Robin Hood or Jesse James in folklore, as the man who fought British colonial officers and helped the rural Irishmen. His father was an Irish convict.

Fermet formulated this theorem in 1637 at age 36, stating that in the equation aⁿ + bⁿ = cⁿ if a, b and c are not equal, then no three positive integers greater than the two can satisfy the equation. No successful proof was available for the theorem for the next 358 years, making it the most difficult maths problem on the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1995, however, British mathematician Andrew Wiles worked on the attempts of many mathematicians before him to create a proof for the theorem.

Fermet is most known for the theorem but he has other important work to his credit too. His work was a reference point for Sir Isaac Newton when he discussed his early ideas on calculus. He also invented analytic geometry, worked on light refraction and researched the weight of the earth. He worked with Pascal on the theory of probability as well. Fermet remains one of the most respected mathematicians of his time and it is little wonder therefore that the Google Doodle today was created after him.

Dec 27, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) In a new research which is sure to be welcomed with open arms by chocolate fanatics all across the globe, scientists have decoded the genetic makeup of the cocoa bean that is set to make the delicacy all the the more irresistible. The study was carried out by a group of internationally renowned scientists who unlocked the genetic code of a kind of cacao called Criollo that is known to produce the best variety of chocolate all over the world. Researchers believe that the knowledge about the genetic code of chocolate would enable the manufacture of a healthier, sustainable as well as delectable variety of the cocoa beans. The results of the study was published recently in the journal Nature Genetics

The international team of scientists which was headed by France’s CIRAD organization studied the genetic make-up of a variety of Theobroma cacao chocolate tree known as Criollo which was grown domestically for the first time about 3000 years ago by people of the Maya dynasty in Central America. In the tree, the scientists were able to identify an estimated 28,798 genes which also included specific genetic material that has higher immune power and a group of genes that helps in the production of cocoa butter. While some of the genes that were deciphered gave the chocolate its characteristic aroma, texture, flavor and color, the rest were responsible for affecting the levels of hormones, natural antioxidants and organic chemicals such as terpenoids. The findings of the study is being considered to be significant as by altering the sequence of the genes, scientists hope to further accentuate the characteristics and positive attributes of chocolate. Not only can the flavor and texture of the cocoa beans be improved, making few changes in the genetic makeup can also increase its immune ability by protecting it against fungal diseases as well as other insects which would impart a major impetus to the plant breeding programs.

Siela Maximova who is associated with the Pennsylvania State University and is one of the members of the team of scientists said, ‘Our analysis of the Criollo genome has uncovered the genetic basis of pathways leading to the most important quality traits of chocolate-oil, flavonoid and terpene biosynthesis. It has also led to the discovery of hundreds of genes potentially involved in pathogen resistance, all of which can be used to accelerate the development of elite varieties of cacao in the future.’

Apart from the generic mapping of chocolate, internal group of researchers also unlocked the genetic make-up of a variety of strawberries in a bid to create a new, more improved and flavorsome version of the fruit that would also be resistant to different forms of diseases. After evaluating the genes of woodland strawberry, the scientists deciphered as many as 35,000 genes that yielded the aroma, flavor, color and nutritional values to the fruit. The findings of the research has been hailed by many experts who feel that it is an important step towards creating a new generation of rich and creamy chocolates as well as tastier, flavorsome strawberries.

London, Nov 26, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) A quarter of people in the United Kingdom are still unaware of the fact that they are HIV positive while the total number of news cases has plummeted, a new survey has revealed. The results of the survey that was released on Friday highlighted that an estimated 86,500 people in United Kingdom are infected by HIV but almost a quarter of them have no idea about the fact that they are carrying the virus. The report stated that in UK, 1.4 individuals per 1,000 of the population are infected with HIV, which includes people who are diagnosed as well as undiagnosed.

The report by Health Protection Agency said that in the year 2009, an estimated 6,630 people were diagnosed with HIV infection, a decrease in the number of new cases for the fourth year consecutively. The survey reported that half of those patients were diagnosed with HIV after they had crossed the stage from where treatment should have already commenced. While talking about the findings of the survey, HPA’s head of HIV surveillance Dr Valerie Delpech said,”"We’re very concerned that a large number of people in the UK are unaware of their HIV status, and that half of all newly diagnosed people are diagnosed late, meaning they may not benefit from very effective treatments.” She also urged for better testing facilities in areas where the prevalence of the infection was more.The HPA official added that pilot studies have proved that registering all adults in these areas as well as evaluating the hospital services in the specified regions could make a significant impact on making people aware of the treatment as well as increasing awareness about HIV infection.

A spokesperson of the British charity Terrence Higgins Trust divulged to the media that early diagnosis in cases of HIV is extremely pertinent as sooner the treatment kicks off, the better the long-term prognosis. Nov 26, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) The health risk that cannabis poses is likely to reach a new height if revelations of a new study are taken into account. Smoking cannabis may muzzle the action of the immune system and increase the risk of developing cancer, the new study has divulged. The research which was undertaken by American scientists concentrated on finding the link between the action of the cannabis chemical THC on the immune system of the body.

While revealing details of the study, lead author Dr Prakash Nagarkatti who is associated with the University of California, stated, “These results raise interesting questions on whether increased susceptibility to certain types of cancers or infections caused from smoking marijuana results from induction of MDSCs.” The researcher also added that the immune suppressor cells are unique in nature and they might have been produced by inappropriate generation of certain growth factors by the cancer cells or other chemical factors which in turn resulted in the suppression of response of the immune system. “Marijuana cannabinoids present us with a double edged sword,” Dr Nagarkatti added. One one hand, the chemical in cannabis makes the body more susceptible to cancer and different infections. However, on the other hand, the further analysis of these compounds could provide the perfect tool to treat a huge variety of clinical ailments by suppressing the immune system which is beneficial in these cases.

Meanwhile, experts feel that the results of the study might have greater implications not only for those who take cannabis recreationally but also for those who take the drug to improve ailments which includes insomnia, depression and pain. Moreover, a better view of how to suppress the immune system could also give revealing insights about the treatment of diseases which are caused when the body’s defense mechanism turns against it. The findings of the study hogged the limelight after it was published in European Journal of Immunology.

Apart from lowering the activity of the immune system, chemicals in cannabis is also attributed to considerable mental health risk, as has been proved by previous studies. According to earlier studies, teenagers who smoke cannabis on a regular basis are 1.6 times more prone to suffer from distinct psychiatric problems including schizophrenia by the time they reach their mid-20′s.

The Chinese authorities on Saturday announced to make the yuan exchange rate more “flexible”. The stance taken by the Chinese authorities comes just before the G20 summit which is supposed to take place later this month.

Jimmy Dean entered the world of entertainment as a host to a popular radio show named “Town and Country Times” on WARL after his initials tenure with the U. S. Air Force back in late 1940s. Jimmy was inducted in the Country Music Hall Of Fame as recently as February 23, 2010. Although at the age of 81, Dean preferred to remain out of the limelight and spent a semi retirement life with his second wife in Henrico County, he had always remained one darling Country singer who lived king size life.
