Copenhagen, December 18- UN Climate Summit or the COP 15, which started on December 7, 2009 was supposed to highlight the climate change threats, checking carbon emission and greenhouse gas emissions. Delegates from one hundred and ninety two nations have been invited to attend the conference so that they can discuss the issues and find out some effective measures for coping with pollution leading to climate change. Though the Copenhagen Climate Summit is aimed at reducing global warming, the conference has become heated on account of several leaked documents.
Few weeks earlier, some cyber criminals hacked the server of East Anglia University’s Climate Research Center and got access to the private emails of the scientists . They not only hacked the mails but also published them on the web, which raised several controversies and earned criticism from the intellectuals. Though the climate research scientists at the Copenhagen conference have shifted its focus from the Climate Gate Scandal that referred Global Warming as a hoax, another leaked document changed the scenario of the conference. While the delegates from all the nations were trying to find some effective method to check pollution, a leaked document enraged the representatives of the developing countries.
Recently, some of the leading dailies stated that a document that has been leaked in the conference, indicated that the burden of checking carbon emission will increase on the developing countries. It offended the delegates of these countries and affected the discussions in the conference. The leaked document, which is also known as the ‘Danish text’ disappointed the social activists and representatives of the developing countries who wanted to find an effective solution without increasing further pressure of checking carbon emission.
According to sources, the developing countries consider that if the terms of the Danish text gets implemented then the per capita carbon emission limits of the developing and developed countries would become unequal. The representatives of these countries were not only upset with the immediate effects of the term but also were disappointed after considering the long term effect of this pact. As the document also aimed to reduce the role of the United Nations and abandon the Kyoto Protocol, many representatives considered it would have negative effects on the world. One of the senior diplomats present in the conference considered it to be, “a very dangerous document for developing countries. It is a fundamental reworking of the UN balance of obligations. It is to be superimposed without discussion on the talks.”
Though several reports have surfaced against the leaked document and multiple analysis were made on the terms of the documents, it has not yet come into effect. The document, which is still a draft has raised the concern of the developing countries and their representatives are trying their best to prevent it from being effective. It is expected that the state heads who will join the final leg of this conference will help the scientists come out with a solution. People all over the world have lots of hope in this conference and it is expected that the delegates would take the necessary actions for making the conference a success.
