Hallaton Roman Coin Found In Britain

coins Hallaton Roman Coin Found In Britain London, Jan 30, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) A silver coin which was excavated in the year 2000 has found new significance according to county council. The coin was found in Leicestershire near Hallaton along with 5,000 other coins, a decorated bowl as well as a helmet. The coin dates back to 221 B.C. It is said to be one of the oldest pieces of Roman money that is found in Britain. The coin did not have a mark saying who minted the coin. This indicates that it is the oldest coin as the last coin which was excavated in Berkshire had the moneyer’s mark providing evidence that it was made at least 4 years later.

The coin has Goddess Roma excavated on one side and on the other side there are two mythical twins Castor and Pollux who are sitting on galloping horses. It is referred to as “something very special” by David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for communities and well being.

The Hallaton coin is now at Harborough Museum, Market Harborough with other coins which were found towards the end of the Iron Age dating back to first century A.D. According to a museum staff, it is truly a mystery how the coin of the ancient age was found by the Corieltavi tribe. Archaeologists have researched that Roman Republican coins were found in Britain even before the conquest of Romans in 43 A.D. They provide evidence of trade exchange in both the countries.

According to the professor of the University of Leicester’s School of Archaeology and Ancient History, David Mattingly, the discovery of the coin “indicates there was contact between this region and the Roman Empire despite the distance between the East Midlands and the parts of Britain the Romans arrived in, like Colchester and Chesterton.” He further added that the coin which was produced in Rome when Hannibalic wars were going on and now it is found in Britain after a long time.
