This fact comes to light following a recent research which reveals that being overweight accounts for about one third of the deaths that are caused due heart diseases. The new revelation might mean that the 67,000 deaths which is recorded in Britain each year might be the result of the rapidly increasing waistline and expanding body mass index (BMI) of the British population.
A decade old study undertaken by Dutch scientists reveals that obesity could be the root cause of fatal cardiovascular ailments and the impacts are much more widespread than earlier estimated. The research has been conducted by taking into account the heath conditions of 20,000 men and women between the age group of 20 to 65, who have been monitored for a period of ten years. Ineke van Dis from the Netherlands Heart Foundation who led the study adds, “What this study shows is the substantial effect which (being) overweight and obesity have on cardiovascular disease, whether fatal of non-fatal.” Moreover, it has also been emphasized that being overweight is likely to have more grievous impact on cardiovascular ailments in the near future. High blood pressure, increased cholesterol levels and smoking are the other reasons that are considered to be the high risk factors contributing to heart diseases. Another startling revelation was that compared to the normal weight individuals, chances of people with obese BMI, dying of heart ailments is four times higher.
The new findings surely cannot be considered to be a good news for Britain as it is being estimated that the obesity levels in the country is all set to double by the year 2015. These revelations call for strict actions on the part of health officials and heart foundations who need to ensure that obesity is treated as a major ailment and at the same time initiatives are taken to reduce the heath risks by providing people with healthier options.
Meanwhile, reports claim that one third of the total deaths in Britain is caused due to heart related ailments and at the same time every year around 200,000 people lose their lives as a result of cardiovascular diseases. With 2.6million people suffering from coronary heart disease in Britain, taking necessary steps to tackle obesity among the general population seems to be of imperative need right now.
