Let’s be brutally honest here, there is no way your boss will take real notice of you as the next in line for promotion unless your co-workers like you a good deal first. Consider the Miss Workplace Congeniality sash and crown yours with our “friendly” tips:
- Lend a hand: Colleague struggling to meet a deadline? Girl in the fourth cubicle swamped under files? Guy in cubicle 22 has been so busy that you haven’t seen him near the coffee machine all day? Earn really big brownie points by offering to help. Believe us when we tell you this, the offer will pay off when you are in a tight spot and need help.
- Argue Right: Lear how to “fight” right. Keep your volume and temper down, do not ever get personal and look for the solutions. Even better, do not “team” up, and be the first to offer a compromise, even if you have to be the one to give up on your pride sometimes. People others will know you as nice, and congenial, and before long, word will go to the boss.
- Share the credit: If someone has helped you in a project, or offered a great idea that made your work easier, let the others know and in the process, make sure the boss hears it too. You will come across as generous and non-threatening, and better, as a great team player.
- Be Cheerful: You will not get too far if you are crabby all the time. Put on your best smile and sty positive even when you see things are going adversely for you. Don’t panic when work gets hectic. Your colleagues will notice when you come across as rational and can handle any situation without getting a bad case of grumps. Only, don’t lather it on.
You are going to thank us when you are called in for a promotion and a raise, and when coworkers take it well in their stride because they see you as the girl who deserved it most.
