London, Dec 22 (PRINTWORDS NEWS) -
It is quite rare to find a Computer accessory or product that is perfect at the time of its debut. Almost Every technological innovation has some drawbacks that the users find out. It is the user feedbacks that helps the companies in rectifying the shortcomings and bring out an improved version of a device. The same has been the case with netbooks. The small cousin of notebooks created a good amount of curiosity among the users when Asus launched its category defining Eee PC range a year back. The netbooks were targeted at the kids but they found takers among the students and users looking for an inexpensive second PC for on the move computing.
However, the netbooks particularly those belonging to the first generation had their share of flaws. While the users loved the portability of the netbooks their main grievance was its lackluster graphics performance and slower Atom CPU that struggled to run resource hungry applications. Things improved to an extent when Nvidia released its Ion platform but the number of Ion based netbooks is still few. Intel quickly realized that its Atom lineup needed an overhaul to cope with the next generation applications and perform every kind of computing related work.
That explains why Intel has released a new lineup of Atom CPUs prior to the CES2010. This is likely to prompt the netbook manufacturers to unleash new models based on the revamped Atom processors. Intel’s much touted Pine Trail platform that combines NM10 Express chipset and N450 processor will give the netbook users improved battery life and better graphics performance, according to the company. The USP of the Pine Trail design is that it brings GPU and CPU together on a single chip. This aids in reducing the chip package by more than 55 percent. It is the first time Intel has followed a monolithic processor architecture. The recently released Asus Eee PC 1005PE uses the brand new Atom CPU and offers battery life in excess of 8 hours.
It is expected that the new netbooks fitted with Pine Trail platform will be offered with Windows 7. According to the industry buzz, some models can ship with Intel’s Moblin OS, a derivative of Linux. Besides the N450 that runs at a clock speed of 1.66 GHz, Intel is releasing a dual core Atom CPU named D510 which has a 1MB cache. The N450 CPU offers inbuilt 720p HD support. However, Intel is in talks with other vendors to upscale the graphics capability so that the users can watch Full HD video using these processors without any hiccup.
