June 29, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) The Detroit Tigers vs Minnesota Twins match turned out to be disappointing for the Detroit Tigers in spite of the 7-5 victory. Reliever Joel Zumaya injured himself badly while pitching in the 8th inning. The excruciating pain in his arm made him collapse to the ground after the throw. The players and trainers rushed towards him as he sat on the ground writhing with pain. He was helped off the field by the trainers and immediately sent for scanning and treatment.
Manager Jim Leyland said that he is devastated by the injury and does not want to speculate about its impact in the future. He said that there was no indication of the injury even on night before the game. He added that he feels every throw has the potential to be a player’s last considering that the human arm is not built for throws of that speed. Catcher Gerrard Laird said that he heard a pop sound as soon as Joel Zumaya pitched and understood that it was a bad injury when he was collapsing in pain. The released footage showed that Joel Zumaya’s arm flinched involuntarily while he was down on the ground and he held it close to his body with an expression of pain while walking off.
Joel Zumaya has been plagued by injuries earlier in his career but this is his first injury to the elbow. Due to the constant injuries he has not been able to pitch more than 40 innings in a year. His injury will be great loss to the side according to Gerrard Laird. No celebrations were noticed in the Detroit Tigers’ camp in spite of the crucial 7-5 victory against the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
