Dec.20, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) It is well understood that the days leading to the debut of her performance at the West End Stage must have weighed heavily on Hollywood actress Keira Knightly. Though no such attempt is embraced almost with complete abandon and warmth by all, for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” the timid venture proved not to be as taxing as otherwise. Her portrayal of the character of Jennifer in Moliere’s comedy “The Misanthrope” was acknowledged by the majority of the multitudes of the critics amidst mixed reviews.
The stunning actress had earlier stated that she expected to be “burned alive” by the critics at the end of her debut performance came to an end itself. However, the not-so-cold reaction should have pacified her considerably. People have somehow taken to her imparting a modern touch to the character of Moliere’s Jennifer, well. Well, almost all.
According to an excerpt from Benedict Nightingale appearing in Times, “She catches the waywardness [of her character] but not the authority to explain how she can dominate a gathering by more than beauty.” Another one by Michael Billington states, “..even if she doesn’t always know what to do with her hands, she gives a perfectly creditable performance.” Others were not so gentle in the handling however and Quentin Letts wrote in the Daily Mail saying that her performance was “on the dull side.” He went on to say, “Keira Knightly may be one of 21st century cinema’s revered objects, but on stage she proves little better than adequate. She has all the charisma of a serviceable goldfish. The character as portrayed by Miss Knightly is little beyond an elegant mannequin.” According to Paul Callan, “Her lack of stage experience is sometimes painfully evident.” Going by the measure that this is the first time around that she has ventured in to the West End arena, the feedback is not so much of a set back.
Overwhelmed by the welcoming response that she has received for her work, the actress says that she is grateful for all the wishes that have come her way as well as the moral support extended to her by her friends from the world of glamour and showbiz. Throughout her performance, her boyfriend Rupert Friend was seen to be an active part of the audience, supporting her enthusiastically.
