Layoff Continues Unabated At Lloyds Banking Group: Unions Cry Foul

London, Dec 1 (PRINTWORDS NEWS) -lloyds1 Layoff Continues Unabated At Lloyds Banking Group: Unions Cry FoulThe layoff scenario in Lloyds Banking Group has become worrying as 373 of its workers are going to be shown the door in Brighton. The trade unions have reacted to the huge job cuts and they have termed it as alarming. The entity acquired HBOS last year and since then almost 15000 workers have been made redundant. The recent layoff was preceded by another that caused 300 redundancies a few days back. Lloyds revealed that it would cease operations at the Brighton call centre in the first half of 2010. It currently has over 500 employees. Among these workers 162 will get redeployed but the rest will have to face layoff.

However, the bank tried to dispel the accusations that the huge layoff will affect its customer service. Lloyds representatives said that the work done at Brighton will be shifted to its other existing call centers. However, the trade union Unite seemed far from assured by this statement. The union’s national officer Rob MacGregor said that the trend of layoff seen in this organization is unprecedented.

HBOS was taken over by Lloyds last year and the deal was brokered by Gordon Brown and the entity’s Chairman, Victor Blank. The deal has not yielded positive results and Sir Victor has resigned from his post. When the news of a clandestine £61.6 billion loan given to Royal Bank of Scotland and HBOS was revealed last week, everyone was stunned. This was given along with a £500 billion breather collected from the taxpayer’s money. Lloyds is going through a tough time and its incessant layoff announcements have made Lloyds shareholders skeptical.
