Old Trafford, Jan 3, (PRINTWORDS NEWs) The day belonged to Leeds from the moment the referee’s whistle blew off at the Old Trafford’s ground today. At the end of the action packed match, the score board displayed 1-0. The men in the popularly loved white uniforms were completely indomitable all through the match- from the start to the finish. There was nothing much that Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and the ManU boys could do in order to curb the merciless onslaught. Though Rooney didn’t relent his continuous attempt at scoringa goal all through the entire span of the 95:30 minutes of the exhilarating match, his enthusiastic attempts were ably curbed. With this, Manchester United has been forced to make a shocking exit from the third round of the FA Cup. Which, going by the present track of the team, was quite a far bet. But then, they were braced against an equally mighty opponent and one against whom the bad blood ran quite deep.
Though there was a huge anticipation regarding the outcome of the made many days in advance [as wagers were loosely placed on either sides], nobody could deny that there lay an even undaunted undercurrent of fear regarding what the fan’s reactions would be to the result. For, it is not hugely uncommon to see frequent fights break out at the venue when the teams locked in a battle were Leeds United and Manchester United.
Beckford’s easy and seemingly effortless goal coming in at the 19th minute mark was the factor that sealed the fate for today’s match. After that, there wasn’t much that Manchester United could do to come back in to the game. Though that did not mean that they did not try. Try they did, even till the nth moment.
The match was awarded an extra time of 5:30 minutes and in that span of time saw the ManU fans wrenching their fingers and the men in the red-gold uniform launch continuous and ever persistent attacks on the defence of their opponent team. The 93:10 mark saw Wayne Rooney take up a full frontal attack which turned futile. Manchester United however, managed to retain the superior count in terms of possession, with an amazing 58.9% compared to Leeds’ 41.1%.
The eventful match also saw its share of showdowns. There were in all, 2 yellow cards being shown to 2 members from either side. Bradley Johnson managed to gain the ire of the match referee and saw the face of the yellow card. Which in noway lessened the enthusiasm of the winning side. No red card was involved in the match however. Leeds also saw a late switch made in the 92:23 minute. By then however, the fate of the match was somehow sealed. As many as 11 fouls were committed by Manchester United. Leeds United didn’t stay back in this record by far and came in with 12 fouls.
Manchester United also scored more points in passing, in comparison to Leeds United. Leeds recorded a 63% and ManU, 74.3%.
Nevertheless, the match proved to be a thorough entertainer, from start to finish and the ground at Old Trafford couldn’t have witnessed any better welcome to the New Year.
