Feb 6, (PRINTWORDS NEWS)- S640 550x337 Nikon Scores Almost Perfect 10 With Coolpix S640Nikon has earned a reputation among the digital camera users for its compact Coolpix series. The models belonging to this series offer decent performance without pinching a hole in your pocket. Its latest model –the Coolpix S640 is aimed at the gadget freaks who love to own stylish gadgets and flaunt them too. It is available in black, white and silver and is quite svelte so you can pocket it easily. In spite of its slim profile the camera does not look cheap thanks to its sleek metallic finish.

The USP of the camera is its wide-angle lens that is 28 mm equivalent. It offers 5x optical zoom-adequate for casual users. The controls are easy to use and even a beginner would be able to learn and use them in a while. A useful addition is the USB charge feature. The S640 uses a brilliant ‘vibration reduction’ image stabilization technology that beats rival models by a fair margin. It is handy in reducing motion blur and accidental shakes. As is common with many compact cameras the S640 offers 15 scene modes. Nikon’s patented auto scene mode usually produces good results in various lighting conditions.

The other useful features like red eye fix, smile shutter and blink detection make their way into the Coolpix S640. While you may argue these features are available in Kodak EasyShare M381 or Samsung WB500, Nikon’s implementation is better and seems to work faster. Where the camera really disappoints is movie recording. Agreed, a digital camera is not meant for shooting high quality video, but many compact cameras like the Canon Ixus series offer HD movie recording. The S640 still sticks to standard definition VGA video recording. You can not use optical zoom while recording video. overall, this is a model you should pick if you are looking for a reasonably priced and decent entry level digital camera.
