As the general elections of the United Kingdom is coming closer, the Conservative Party is pointing several issues to increase pressure upon the government and reduce their popularity among common men. After highlighting several issues, they have now raised question on the rehabilitation program that allows the prisoner to spend some night out of prison, on the final year of their jail term. Before the final release, prisoners are allowed to spend few night outside so that they can once again get adjusted to the community life. However, in a recent report, the Tory Party has claimed that government is allowing jail inmates to spend nights outside so that they can check overcrowding of the prisons. The report also claimed that the number of prisoners allowed to remain out of jail before the completion of their term has increased significantly in the recent days. They have stated that records of 2006 stated approximately 4000 prisoners were allowed to rehabilitate in the society but in 2008, the figure has increased to almost 11, 500 prisoners.
Taking advantage of the increasing number of prisoners in the cells, the members of the Tory Party has also claimed the government is incompetent to deal with the increasing crime rate of the countries. Crime rate of the country has been a serious problem faced by the authorities and releasing the prisoners for helping them to get adjusted with the social life has often given them the opportunity to commit more crimes. Records stated that criminals who were imprisoned with the charges of rape, murder or any such violent criminal activities have misused the opportunity of taking few days leave before their final release and committed more crimes. The law that allows prisoners to spend few days out of the jail was already unpopular with many people and Tory Party has taken its advantage to highlight government’s failure to control crime rate and check population pressure in jails.
Ministry of Justice has dismissed the claims brought by the Conservative Party and stated that the scheme has been planned for easing the rehabilitation process of the prisoners and not to relief the jail authorities from overcrowding problems. A spokesperson of the government stated, “ROR exists to rehabilitate offenders and make communities safer, not to relieve population pressures. We are dealing with those pressures by putting in more prison places, with nearly 25,000 created since 1997”. With this statement the government has also dismissed the claim of Conservative Party that the country does not have enough number of prisons to provide accommodation for the criminals. Sources also stated that government always gives maximum priority for public safety and consider rehabilitation of the criminals to be a part of this.
Justice Ministry has denied all the claims brought by the Torry Party. They have stated that rehabilitation of the prisoners has helped the country to reduce the adult reoffending rates of the country. Supporting the rehabilitation program, they stated that volunteer work, education, training and allowing the jail inmates to maintain family contact is needed to check crime rate of the country.
