London, Jan 1 (PRINTWORDS NEWS) –
The rail commuters in UK are likely to face tough times in 2010. The commuters will see that season ticket prices have fallen on the majority of trains. However, they will feel hurt by the increased car parking costs outside the stations. Passengers using West Coast and east Coast main line are most likely to be affected by this price hike. The London residents will have to pay 12.7 percent more bus fare and almost 4% extra tube fare. The season ticket holders will get relief from yearly cost hike.
The passengers availing off peak services and advance tickets will bear the brunt. If you want to go to Swindon from London at supersaver fare you will need to pay more. The return tickets for Virgin Trains to Manchester from London will cost more. A virgin trains spokesperson denied that the new policies will be detrimental for the passengers. He also said that steeper prices are needed to control demand on some busier train routes in the UK.
The government is also quick to point out the fall in the price of the season tickets. The Transport secretary thinks that the falling the price may encourage many people to choose train as the preferred mode of transport. This will contribute to the environment and economy he feels. However, the unions and passenger forums think that it will benefit only a part of the passengers instead of the majority. The Government of UK has been facing pressure for quite some time to conform to lower train fare as practiced by European nations.
