June 21, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) Tony Hayward the Chief Executive Officer of the British Petroleum which is going through its worst crisis ever due to the Gulf of Mexico oil well leak that is spewing gallons of oil everyday into the sea, has yet again angered the lawmakers of the Capitol Hill and the residents of the coastal area with his weekend trip to England to witness one of the famous annual yacht race competition. While some lawmakers have termed his latest move as a mark of “arrogance” others have marked it as yet another public relation disaster made by the CEO and the company that has been criticized many a times in the past for making controversial statements.
Tony Hayward had been to England during the weekend attending the annual J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race in which one of his yacht “Bob” was competing. The spokesman for the race has revealed to a media source via e-mail that “Tony Hayward is a co-owner of an entered boat called ‘Bob’ that was racing today, however his name did not appear on any crew list”. On Saturday, the BP officials and spokespersons have gone on to defend the action of Tony Hayward by saying that it is the first holiday that Tony has taken after the oil leak crisis that broke up on April 20. Sheila Williams a BP spokeswoman on Saturday said in a telephone interview that “He [Tony] is having some rare private time with his son”.
However, the explanation has in no way helped the situation of the CEO. The White House chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said during a television interview that Hayward’s action is “part of a long line of P.R. gaffes and mistakes” that he has been making in recent past. A media source quoted Senator Richard Shelby, Republican of Alabama as voicing that Mr. Hayward’s outing as the “height of arrogance”. The Senator added “I can tell you that yacht ought to be here skimming and cleaning up a lot of the oil….He ought to be down here seeing what is really going on. Not in a cocoon somewhere”.
