We got to see massive improvements in touch screen technology. Apple‘s supremacy in touch screen segment was challenged by the sleek models of LG, Samsung and HTC. It was the year of the netbooks as well. By the end of 2009 second generation netbooks arrived with improved storage and graphics technology. The success of James Cameron’s 3D Hollywood epic ‘Avatar’ inspired many to think that 3D will be the next big thing for 2010. Indeed, 2010 is going to take technology to a new level. The CES 2010 is approaching and internet rumor sites are abuzz with rumors surrounding the upcoming products from  giants like Apple and Google.

The mobile phone segment will continue to grow and smartphones will dominate 2010, according to the industry experts. Samsung announced its ambitious Bada platform last year and it is likely to introduce new generation phones based on this platform. Motorola has made a successful comeback with its Droid and Milestone models and it also has a number of phones based on Android OS. Whether the Android based phones will be able to usurp iPhone remains to be seen. The experts are convinced that with proper marketing and input by developers it will upstage all other big players in the market. However, Microsoft is about to launch Windows Mobile 7 OS and it will pose a challenge to other Mobile OSes. Nokia, the leading handset maker suffered huge loss in high end phone segment last year with its N97 receiving lukewarm response. It needs to come up with some killer models; otherwise its numero uno slot will move to Samsung.

Google hogged the limelight in 2009 with the first preview of its cloud based Chrome OS and the final version may come out in 2010. However, the tech industry is betting big on Nexus One, also called the Googlephone. The possibility of a number of netbooks based on Chrome OS is strong. Some people think that Google may not succeed with its OS attempt at least in 2010. Nvidia will battle with Intel for dominance in netbook segment. Intel has released its much touted Pine Trail platform and Nvidia is also ready to counter with its Ion 2. Technically, Ion 2 seems to be the better choice.

3D TV is likely to be launched in UK but it will take some time before it reaches the mass. As with any new technology the price will be steep in the early days. Besides, the idea of using 3D glasses for watching 3D content is yet to catch up with average users. Though Acer introduced a 3D capable laptop in 2009 it has not exactly created a sensation in the market.

Digital cameras became surprisingly affordable in 2009 and the trend will continue in 2010. A lot of models will offer touchscreen based controls. HD movie recording will be the in thing for the digital cameras. A lot of compact cameras will offer optical zoom in excess of 10x. Speaking of Cameras, the mobile phone cameras are about to get better. Manufacturers like Samsung and Sony Ericsson are likely to release phones with a whopping 12 MP sensor. Soon they will replace standalone digital cameras.
