Feb 11, London (PRINTWORDS NEWS) 40 year old, Lakhbir Kaur Singh, mother of three, poisoned her lover’s curry with aconite, the very lethal Indian herb to kill him. She and her lover Lakhbinder Singh Cheema, 39-year-old, had an affair for 16 long years. Lakhbinder and Lakhbir kept their relationship a secret in fear of scandalising their family. Lakhbinder, known as Lucky, recently told Lakhbir that he wanted to end their relationship as he was getting married to another girl, Gurjeet Kaur Choough, 22. Feeling betrayed and jealous Lakhbir wanted to take revenge. She sneaked into Lucky’s apartment in Feltham, West London and mixed the queen of all poisons, aconite to the curry.
Unknowingly Lucky and his fiance Gurjeet had the adulterated curry in dinner. Within minutes both could feel something was wrong in the curry they ate. Mr. Cheema having consumed more was early to show symptoms. Both of them were taken to the hospital where Lucky died and Gurjeet went into coma for 3 days.
Lakhbir Kaur Singh whose husband was abroad receiving cancer treatment claimed she had sacrificed everything for Mr. Cheema and had aborted thrice. Mrs. Singh most probably got the poison during her last trip to India. She was arrested within hours of the incident when Police found aconite in her coat pocket and handbag; she then claimed that she used it for making beatification lotion along with cow’s urine. Mr. Cheema got a similar episode of near-death experience few months before he actually died. This might be because of a futile attempt of poisoning which he could escape.
Lakhbir Kaur Singh kept denying the murder and implied that her brother-in-law Varinder Singh was responsible for the murder because he was angry about this relationship. Court, however, ignored this accusation. Mrs. Singh got convicted for life for the murder but was freed from the allegations of trying to kill Ms. Choough.
