(PRINTWORDS NEWS)- The quake hit Japan is now staring at a possible nuclear meltdown that could expose the residents to greater risks. Tokyo Electric Power Co has admitted that the radiation levels near the quake hit power plant has crossed safety limit.
The government of Japan has indicated at the possibility of a nuclear meltdown anytime. If the radioactive covers of the two damaged nuclear reactors at Fukushima have melted the consequences could be severe in the long run.
TEPCO said that the power plant that witnessed a reactor explosion has made the crucial cooling system failure. The company had to release steam from the first reactor earlier to avoid a disaster. The first reactor of the company is situated at 240 kms from capital Tokyo.
It underwent an explosion which prompted the authorities to evacuated thousands of people outside the areas of the plant. A number of people suspected to have got exposed to radioactive radiation were admitted to hospital. The nuclear safety agency of Japan says the total number of residents exposed to the harmful radiation can exceed 160.
It has been reported that officials in protective attire are now scanning people suspected to be exposed to radiation at the evacuation centres. TEPCO has been trying to control the situation at the first nuclear reactor plant.
It has been pumping seawater in the plant for keeping the temperature down. The government in Japan is amidst crisis and trying its level best to control the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters seen in the country’s history in several years.
