Daryl Hannah was seen in a familiar accessory – handcuffs – when she was arrested outside the White House for protesting against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Over 500 people have been arrested in the sit-in protest since August 20. The “Splash” and “Wall Street” star was arrested after she continued to sit by the White House sidewalk despite orders from the US Park Police. She also shouted “No to the Keystone pipeline” while being arrested.
Hannah had been arrested before for stopping traffic in West Virginia in 2009 when she blocked a busy street protesting over mining practices. After her recent arrest she said, “Sometimes it’s necessary to sacrifice your freedom for a greater freedom. And we want to be free from horrible death and destruction that fossil fuels cause, and have a clean energy future.”
The proposed pipeline will extend from the Canadian tar sands in Alberta to the refineries on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and is currently on hold awaiting approval from the White House. The State Department claimed that the pipeline will have “no significant impact” on the environment.
